JOB DUTIES:
GENERAL STATEMENT:
This is a highly professional position responsible for directing the statewide fruit fly methods development and control program for the purpose of improving detection and control infrastructure and capabilities to manage or eradicate these serious agricultural pests.
Research:
Conceptualizes, designs, and supervises investigations into the population, migration, life history, natural enemies, host relations, and other environmental, control, or detection factors regarding endemic and exotic fruit flies in Florida.
These investigations are carried out in the laboratory and in the field.
Works on methodology improvement and technique development in all aspects of the program.
Makes program recommendations to fruit fly working groups and task forces and develops pest response guidelines.
Supervising:
Monitors work performance of subordinates, including periodic written evaluations and discussions; counseling to develop skills and correct deficiencies; recognizing employee accomplishments; and recommending timely disciplinary actions as needed.
Approves timesheets and leave requests.
Documents recommendations for special pay increases, reclassifications, and disciplinary actions, when appropriate.
Efficiently carries out employee selection actions when vacancies are to be filled.
Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.
) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner.
Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with division and department policies and procedures.
Supervises and trains technicians, biologists and others assigned for supervision to perform the needed skills involved in developing biological control methods, quality control tests and maintaining necessary records.
Records, Data Management, and Publishing:
Prepares and writes peer-reviewed, scientific publications based on data compiled from research studies.
Maintains proper records of all functions and submits timely and accurate reports of all work performed.
Reports will be written in the proper format and data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical methodology.
Maintains expertise and professional standing in fruit fly methods development and control work through communication and correspondence with other recognized expert scientists.
Works effectively to foster good working relationships with other agencies.
Attends meetings and workshops and gives presentations to keep the Division, our collaborators, and the public informed concerning department and bureau program activities.
Performs other duties as the Bureau Chief may require, including special reports, special assignments and travel, committee appointments, task force appointments, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of entomology including biology and behavior of insects, life history, taxonomy, and insect rearing techniques.
Knowledge of regulatory aspects of plant pests.
Knowledge of agricultural practices, including plant maintenance.
Knowledge of basic laboratory safety procedures.
Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite.
Skill in the use and modification of scientific laboratory and field equipment.
Skill in planning, organizing, and coordinating work assignments.
Skill in collecting, recording, and analyzing scientific data relating to biological sciences.
Skill in compilation of written reports.
Skill in preparation of scientific research reports and adminstrative documents, and publishing results.
Skill in management of resources including funding, personnel, equipment, and supplies.
Skill in planning, designing and conducting projects and analyzing and interpreting the results.
Ability to make decisions and scientific recommendations.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments, delegate tasks and supervise employees.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in a courteous and professional manner.
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to use a microscope for long periods of time.
