The City of Gainesville is seeking a part-time Park Ranger to join the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department's Nature Operations Division.
This position, based primarily at Sweetwater Wetlands Park, will play an integral role in engaging the community and park visitors with meaningful natural and cultural history education and interpretation.
The park ranger will also protect resources, through natural resource management activities and enforcing park rules and regulations.

SUMMARY This is technical and administrative work performing positive public relations, visitor services, enforcement of park rules, natural resource interpretation and protection, environmental education programs and presentations and general grounds and building maintenance duties at the City's parks.
Positions allocated to this class report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision.
Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its day-to-day park operations duties of a temporary nature.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Acts as a public information resource; answers public inquiries about programs and directs park patrons in a positive, diplomatic and respectful manner.
Enforces all rules, regulations and procedures governing the City of Gainesville's park grounds and facilities; enforces by informing park patrons.
Maintains alertness at all times while observing patrons in and around the grounds and facilities.
Patrols park grounds and facilities; observes trespassers, security violations parking violations and unusual situations; contacts law enforcement and parking enforcement officials, as necessary.
Assists patrons in distress; administers first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), if necessary.
Calls for emergency assistance, when needed.
Assists in the recovery of lost children and property, contacts law enforcement, as necessary.
Prepares periodic and special reports, including daily incident, accident and activity logs.
Plans, prepares and delivers organized activities, special events, and environmental education programs and presentations.
Conducts herbicide treatment and/or manual removal of invasive non-native plants.
Performs site and program evaluations, takes notes, and provides feedback to supervisor, including recommendations for modifications and improvements.
Handles the collection of daily receipts and delivers to appropriate City staff.
Maintains assigned park facilities in clean and sanitary conditions at all times.
Keeps trash and litter picked up in and around the assigned park facilities.
Performs minor general maintenance, cleaning, and repair on assigned park facilities; reports damage and/or needed maintenance and repairs to the designated supervisor.
Operates a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe manner.
Keeps all equipment and supplies in good working condition.
Maintains accurate records of programs, materials, supplies, and equipment.
Opens and closes assigned park facilities and buildings, according to schedule and procedures.
Notifies appropriate authorities in event of an emergency Attends work on a continual and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS May assist with other natural resource management activities as required.
May work with and around live animal exhibits and exhibition plantings.
Prepares park facilities for activities, special events, and environmental education programs and presentations; may include setting up chairs and tables, moving furniture and equipment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily.
Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and two (2) years of customer service experience entailing direct contact with the public, preferably in parks, environmental education, nature operations or natural resource management, recreation or education.
One (1) of the following may be used to substitute for up to one (1) year of the required
Experience:
An Associate degree with major coursework in environmental or natural science, education, recreation, biology, wildlife management or related subject or an Environmental Education Certification (or equivalent) or the Florida Master Naturalist Course and Certified Interpretive Guide training by the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) or equivalent.
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES Licenses Valid driver license required upon appointment.
A valid Florida Driver License is required within 30 days of appointment and at all times while employed in this classification.
Certifications American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid is required within six (6) months of appointment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to give individual and group skilled instruction in activities, special events, and environmental education programs and presentations.
Ability to obtain knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods in assigned area of responsibility.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to communicate effectively with persons of varying genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, ages and abilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and adjust to seasonal changes in workload.
Ability to lead and to secure the confidence and cooperation of participants in special events, programs and presentations.
Ability to plan, direct and supervise work of other temporary employees.
Ability to work irregular hours, work alone, or work closely with others.
Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
Ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public.
Ability to obtain knowledge of principles of interpretation and be familiar with nature based programming including live animal exhibits.
Ability to obtain knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
Ability to maintain assigned facilities in clean and sanitary conditions at all times.
Ability to perform minor general maintenance, cleaning and repair on assigned equipment and facilities.
Ability to safely operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions, including the ability to lift, carry, push or pull 50 pounds without assistance.
Must conform to grooming and dress codes (uniforms furnished).
May require the ability to work with and around live animals and exhibit landscapes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT This position requires a flexible work schedule and may require working a varying schedule, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
May be required to work or attend meetings outside regular business hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Work requires the performance of tasks outdoors under varying environmental conditions including extreme heat, humidity, and alligators, venomous snakes, large mammals, biting insects/other invertebrates.
Work requires the ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals, including but not limited to:
herbicides, gasoline, motor oil, household cleaning and maintenance chemicals.
