A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in a laboratory, the biological sciences, or related field.
College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.

JOB DUTIES:
GENERAL STATEMENT:
This position assists in laboratory, field, and greenhouse work associated with production and research dedicated to managing or eradicating invasive invertebrates and plants.
As part of the Bureau of Methods Development and Biological Control, this section also assists with established programs within the bureau and develops new techniques for insect rearing and quality control practices for those programs.
The developmental nature of this work results in a wide variety of changing activities and requires a person with a diverse array of technical skills including biology, entomology, horticulture.
On the job training is available, but prior experience is preferred.
Laboratory Work :
Assist supervisor in conducting research.
These duties include literature review, trap development and design, performing laboratory experiments.
Assist in building or modifying equipment, including minor carpentry work.
Perform daily maintenance of invertebrate colonies using established rearing protocols.
These duties include, but are not limited to, feeding invertebrates and invertebrate/egg collection.
Assist supervisor in fulfilling 3D printing orders, including invertebrate trap design and production, providing other programs with equipment solutions, and 3D printer maintenance and repair.
Maintain clean and sanitized laboratories, insect rearing areas, and various equipment used to maintain insect colonies.
Correctly operate necessary laboratory equipment.
Greenhouse Work :
Assist with the propagation of plants.
Assist in the routine maintenance of greenhouses including pest control, monitoring of temperatures and equipment, and other assigned duties.
Field Work:
Assist with field survey and experimentation, including pest scouting, trapping, and data collection.
Prepare and maintain accurate written records of activities; enter collected data and other information into the appropriate location; prepare reports summarizing activities.
Maintain proper inventory of supplies and equipment used for 3D printing, plant and invertebrate research and rearing.
Includes keeping assigned equipment clean, calibrated and ready for use.
Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of basic laboratory safety procedures.

Knowledge of basic principles in biology, chemistry, engineering and/or statistics.

Skill in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Skill in making innovations to equipment and techniques.

Ability to adapt to changing environments.

Ability to follow specific instructions and strict protocols, compile written reports.

Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and humid environments.

Ability to walk on uneven ground and in inclement weather.

Ability to lift 45 lbs.
