The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) has complete and thorough working knowledge of all functions under his/her purview and can direct and/or operate all the diagnostic specialties to assure its many activities and to provide efficient patient care. The supervisory area of responsibility encompasses Mammography and Ultrasound sections of Diagnostic Imaging Services. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) must possess the ability to maintain compliance in the Mammography Section complying with MQSA, FDA and ACR regulations for yearly evaluations. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) must be able to recommend appointments, advancements or when appropriate, disciplinary actions; ability to evaluate performance, identify continuing education and training needs; and ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) is given general guidelines and direction from the Chief Technologist and Radiology Administrator and is expected to function with initiative and independent judgment in their sphere of responsibilities. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) will formulate plans, delegate authority and follow-up on delegated tasks to assure effectiveness of assignments give to subordinate Lead and staff technologists. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) assigns, directs and reviews work in progress, or upon completion to ascertain problems and takes required corrective action. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) provides instruction and solutions to difficult problems that arise in the sections. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) must be able to give guidance in expeditious flow of productivity in all sections. Duties & Responsibility Include:
Performs annual performance appraisals for assigned staff Assures that Mammography and Ultrasound sections have appropriate coverage Participates as Interview Panel Members, evaluates and makes recommendations for employment Knowledgeable of Reusable Medical Equipment Knowledgeable of appointment and scheduling system and guidelines Acts as Chief Technologist in their absence Participates in formulating and implementing administrative and operational policies/procedures for assigned sections Responsible for maintenance and coordinating repairs of all Medical Imaging/Non-imaging equipment in areas assigned under their supervision Develops administrative and operational plans to improve work flow, increased productivity, fostering of approaches to continuously improved quality of interdepartmental activities Trains new technologist in mammography, biopsy and ultrasound procedures; develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs Assists in preparing the department for Systematic External Review Program Inspections such as MQSA, OIG and ACR Reviews new developments in the field of Ultrasound and Mammography Apprises program staff new Mammography standards and modification to existing mammography standards and guidance authored by VHA, FDA, ACR, etc., and acts as a resource to the Radiologist Reviews and analyze investigation reports from the FDA, ACR, Inspector General and Medical Inspector dealing with the Mammography Program, follows up with the Chief Radiologist, Mammography Radiologist and Chief Technologist to ensure that issues are identified and corrected timely Responsible for Record Reviews, as all records relating to Mammographic QA, peer review, medical audits, calibrations, and physicist inspections are reviewed in a manner and on schedule Directs and performs annual checklists of quality control in assigned area Submits accreditation materials in a prompt and timely manner to ensure review process is completed prior to certificate expiration Work Schedule:

Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Certification:
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the technologist can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in Mammograph and has taken and passed the designated examination. Education:
Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) functions as a Supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the Chief Technologist and Radiology Administrator concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultrasound) is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The Supervisory Radiologic Technologist directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in Mammography & Ultrasound demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:

Experience:
In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a Supervisory Radiologic Technologist (Mammography/Ultra Sound). The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) at the GS-10 level functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below; provides a full range of exams and has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the assigned diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. Physical Requirements:
The work potentially requires moderately long periods of standing and walking. There is some bending, lifting and carrying of light items such as CR film cassettes. There is occasional moderate exertion such as lifting multi-exposure film cassettes or assisting other technicians in lifting and positioning patients. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.
