Health Technician (Optometry)

The position is located in the Optometry Clinic. The Health Technician performs administrative support associated with the Optometry Clinic, supporting the health and medical staff during diagnosis or treatment of patients. The Health Technician is assigned the duty of identifying patients in need of service, triaging patients for imaging and other eye scare services, initiating consultations and referrals on behalf of the eye care provider, conducting specific observations and examination procedures, generating clinical documentation, and performing diagnostic and therapeutic tasks according to the criteria established by the supervisor and local Medical Center policy. Major Duties - 65% The Health Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Clinics. The Health Technician performs preliminary examination of patients prior to examination by residents and attending physicians to include a thorough ocular medical history and past ocular status, visual acuity, neutralization of eyeglasses, papillary extraocular muscle assessment and confrontation visual fields. Obtains refraction and intraocular pressure; performs ancillary tests including A/B/ Scans, color vision, amsler grid, stereopsis, and topography testing. In addition, knowledge is required to perform OCT, keratometry, pachymetry, ophthalmic photography, Humphrey and Goldmann Visual Fields. The Health Technician follows established protocols, and reports results to appropriate individuals. Ancillary Duties - 25% The Health Technician performs user level maintenance of instruments and equipment such as visual acuity projectors, muscle lights, direct and indirect and indirect ophthalmoscopes, retinoscopes, lensometers, perimeters, slit lamps and keratometers. The Health Technician inventories, replaces and orders all medications, equipment and supplies (e.g. replacement of light bulbs) needed for eye clinic. The Health Technician conducts quality control procedures on equipment and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports and workload reporting. The Health Technician demonstrates knowledge of mechanics and function of all equipment in the imaging clinic, cleans and performs routine upkeep, and requests service for all ophthalmic and computer equipment. The Health Technician utilizes technical support to troubleshoot and upgrade computerized equipment. Educational Duties - 10% The Health Technician is to be kept abreast of new techniques, equipment and medicines. The Health Technician keeps abreast of current advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disorders. Work Schedule:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-6) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Knowledge of service-connected disease or exposure to initiate proper forms. Knowledge of medical terminology including abbreviations, meaning, and spelling to read medical reports to determine patient's status for eligibility, and to determine adjunct conditions. Knowledge of normal ocular anatomy and common ocular pathology associated with diabetes and/or aging, e.g. cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy. Must have specific knowledge of photographic activities connected to all phases of the retinal imaging program and use of digital imaging technology. OR Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level (GS-7) you must have one full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:
