Pharmacy Technician (Procurement)

Has operational responsibility for ongoing inventory and procurement of drug and pharmaceutical supplies. Possesses a thorough understanding of procurement sources (i.e., prime vendor, open market, etc.). Keeps current on contracts, product availability, and prices to identify appropriate sources and ensures cost-effective purchasing. Maintains accountability of daily purchases, ensures that incoming stock orders are checked for accuracy and completeness and coordinates receipt. Ensures seamless operation of the Drug Accountability Program. Has knowledge of all aspects of drug characteristics and nomenclature including generic/brand names, dosage forms, drug interchangeability and equivalence, characteristics of drug packaging, what/how drugs are used, drug storage requirements, and special requirements for procurement, storage and handling of various classes of drugs. Has knowledge of a wide variety of supply items which Pharmacy supplies to outpatients. Responds promptly to stock outages by making local purchases, arranging for inter-pharmacy transfer of products or prescription labels, use of pharmacist intervention, and suggestions for product substitution to ensure that patient care needs are met. Leader in periodic inventory to maintain inventory turn performance that meets or exceeds VISN/National goals. Maintains awareness of changes to the formulary and local facility utilization patterns. Coordinates inventory analyses; recommends appropriate stock levels and quantities to order based on utilization trends. Functions as resource to pharmacy staff regarding product availability, inventory, contracts, and fiscal considerations. Assesses needs and utilizes knowledge of Pharmacy operations, policies and procedures to provide staff training/orientation. Processes outdated/unusable/excess inventory for credit or replacement of usable formulary items. Assists in the drug recall process by informing appropriate personnel, checking for applicable lots, sequestering recalled product, and returning drugs for replacement/credit according to specifications of each recall. Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. (1) Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice. (2) Quality of Experience. To be creditable, pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means. (3) Part-time Experience. Part-time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a pharmacy technician would receive 1 week of fulltime credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work. Physical Requirements:

Experience:
One year experience at the next lower level, GS-06 or equivalent as a Pharmacy Technician assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists AND In addition to the experience above, must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk ( ):
Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. The work is performed in an office setting. However, there is exposure to communicable disease, varying patients and distraught visitors and family members. The work is mostly sedentary, involves receiving and placing calls to customers, data entry into VISTA and CPRS programs. The work environment receiving involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
