Medical Technician

The Medical Technician (Central Phlebotomy and Processing Department) is assigned to the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL. The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technician (MT) are, but not limited to, the following:
Obtains venous blood samples by aseptic venipuncture technique from ambulatory patients in the outpatient laboratory and at the patient's bedside for inpatients during scheduled rounds to the hospital wards. Properly labels and initials collected specimens following specimen procurement policies and procedures. Responsible for the proper receipt and accessioning of specimens delivered to the laboratory. Processes clinical laboratory specimens in the Phlebotomy or Central Processing Areas and is responsible for the timely and proper distribution of specimens to the appropriate section or reference laboratories, including the delivery of completed test results when necessary. Maintains phlebotomy supplies at established levels and stocks the specimen procurement rooms and specimen phlebotomy trays and carts. Monitors technical equipment and performs maintenance and quality assurance on instrumentation. Performs Drug Free Work Place collections per the national guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule:
The North Florida/South Georgia Healthcare System is a tertiary healthcare system that provides acute, intermediate, and long-term care 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week and on public holidays. The Medical Technician is required to work regular hours of duty on a recurrent basis with rotating weekend responsibilities, as well as rotating holidays. Medical Technicians may be subject to an occasional change in tour duty with appropriate notification based on staffing needs. The following are the tours in which positions may be filled, and your preferences may be discussed further at the time of Interview (if scheduled). The tours that will be filled are based on the needs of the Service at the time of hire. Day shifts are Monday through Friday with rotating weekend and holidays. 5:

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. The required Specialized Experience for this position is defined as technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and laboratory procedure/testing. Specimen Collection Uses proper specimen collection techniques (phlebotomy/venipuncture, finger sticks, urine, sputum, tissue, etc.); selects appropriate site for sample collection to minimize patient discomfort; uses correct containers and labels; monitors patients for adverse reactions. Computer Skills Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a laboratory atmosphere and requires regular and physical exertion such as sitting (2-4 hours), walking (6-8 hours), repetitive bending (6-8 hours), standing (6-8 hours), moderate lifting (14-30 pounds), and average carrying (14-30 pounds). The work requires specific physical characteristics and abilities and dexterity needed to perform complex analytical and technical procedures. Capacity for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13 to 16 Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, depth perception, normal color vision and the ability to perform phlebotomy procedures and entering patient information, test orders, and data in a computer. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
